"New Year's" Resolution and Borlotti Bean Burger
Most people feel enlightened and ready for a fresh start after Christmas and by New Year they are ready to write down elaborate lists of resolutions. I personally do not get any good rest during the Christmas’ break due to all the pressure of celebrating, getting together and making everyone happy (feeling like myself comes always last in the list). Summer is to me a much better candidate for a real break and I generally feel like I can have a fresh start thereafter.
Packing for our beach-and-hotel vacation in Croatia, I was so concerned about what to bring -not to forget were my sourdough and a minimal survival kit to feed it, plus, a complete pharmacy for my 4-year old princess who often gets sick- so I did not have any time or inspiration to look for a good book to bring with me. Destiny wants that when I stopped at the airport’s bookstore, in the 5 minutes I had to make a choice, I picked up an interesting sounding book titled Eating Animals. Lately, an increasing number of good readings about sustainable and ethical eating has become available, and this particular book stands out from the crowd for the intensity of the emotionally charged contents delivered by the author (a brilliant Jonathan Safran Foer) and for the stringent logic used to support a clear line of thought.
I have long been wondering whether it is right to eat meat and I may have finally come to an agreement with my deep self. Last year I tried to become vegetarian but I was eating too much wheat and legumes, which I am slightly sensitive to (I cannot eat too much of them), so I stopped (being a vegetarian). Now I know that it’s all about measure, as always. So, my “New Year’s” resolution is to follow my heart and not to eat meat or fish. But, risking here to sound too weird, I could easily eat insects one day. Insects may be the future of omnivore eating: they are plenty and would not pollute much if farmed. Plus… they are indeed quite distant from us and should be more easy to consider as food -how come we instead feel better eating what’s cute?
This said, here comes a totally yummy 100% veggie burger recipe for everyone -no insect included. The first time I made it I used eggs. This time I saved some of the cooking -or preserving if canned- liquid of the beans instead. The result was utterly delicious and could shine on the table of any true foodie, no matter what her/his food preferences are (complete recipe below).

I adore borlotti beans. I actually manage to grow a few this year and aside from the possums reaching into my little enclosed bean bed from all directions apart from underneath (they haven’t learned to tunnel yet!) and form a “bean cube” of foliage, I got quite a few to save and plant the seed in my fully enclosed veggie garden this year. Love this recipe and it promises to be next weeks scrumptious meal of the week :). Cheers for sharing 🙂
love to hear about your farm and your life in the countryside. you are a great inspiration for us who stay in the city… xo
Splendidi da vedersi non oso pensare da mangiarsi. Ho già fatto molte volte i burgers di spinaci e ceci ora vorrei provare questi. Mi puoi dare le dosi in grammi? Grazie.
cara Rina, sara’ fatto prestissimo, grazie per i bei complimenti.
I love bean burgers! Not the pre-bought ones, the ones you make at home. They can be quite delicious. Have you tried using lentils? And eggplants work great too!
lentils I have tried, eggplants also but I want to do more with them, they are delicious.
Good for you Barbara, I’m glad you came to a decision about vegetarianism that you are happy with 🙂 These burgers look like a great place to start! (But I’m glad they don’t contain insects – that’s one culinary pathway that I am NOT ready for yet! lol) You are so right about Christmas and New Years being terrible times for self-reflection and resolution – a vacation is a much better environment 🙂
eheh. I know it has been a roller coast with my eating choices. last fall attempt did not work cause I was eating too much (I mean, really TOO much) wheat and legumes, which now I know I cannot do. and I am also going low carb that I had never thought possible for a lacto-vegetarian or a vegan.
Your bean burgers look like they would make even a meat lover happy.
I know! my carnivore man loves them 🙂
Mmm, these look amazing! I love bean burger patties, and one of the reasons is all of the amazing herbs you put in there. Never tried it with borlotti beans though, putting that on my list!
glad you like these Yvonne, we were fighting over the last one 🙂
I tuoi hamburger fagiolosi mi ispirano proprio tanto. Sani e gustosi. Un bacione, buona giornata
These burgers sound and look amazing! And I’m relieved to see there are no insects involved 😉 I do love bean burgers (although I’ve never tried to make one) but I’m not so sure how I’d feel about an insect patty – although you may be right that it is the future for non-meat-eating omnivores… In the interim, thank goodness for these tasty burgers!
that will not only be the future of some of us, it may be the future for anyone who wants to continue eating “meat”: as many as we are we won’t be able to eat big animals for much longer.
verament euna ottima idea di come si possa realizzare un hamburger saporito e sano e anche vegetariano!!
